Sweet Tea: Black Gay Men of the South

Sweet Tea is a one-person play by the award-winning scholar, performer, and writer, E. Patrick Johnson, who immerses audiences in the stories of black, gay men who call the American south home. The play was originally developed and produced by Project&’s President and Artistic Director, Jane M. Saks, who helped Johnson adapt his celebrated scholarly book of the same name for the stage by infusing his own personal story into the work.

Drawing on oral histories shared—often for the first time—on porches, in living rooms, and under the generous shade of oak trees, Johnson tells the story of a community that has long existed in the South, but has yet to be explored within its own narratives. He brings depth, passion, humor, and compassion to Sweet Tea’s stories of men of all ages and experiences that are seamlessly connected by autobiographical moments from his own life. The show is an exploration of identity, community, power and partnership that challenges accepted stereotypes of the South and offers an authentic view of the range of black and gay experiences staged therein. Project& produced and launched the southern tour of this groundbreaking production in Durham, North Carolina. It has since been staged in Los Angeles, Chicago, and at the celebrated National Black Theater Festival.
