“Indeed, no experience is required for the dozens of community participants, a diverse crowd including grade-school students and retirees from the Roundtable Neighborhood Senior Center in Brooklyn.”

“PAN is the most recent work produced by Jane Saks and Project&, the organization behind community-centered art like the installation ‘This Is Reading,’ made with the playwright Lynn Nottage to accompany her Pulitzer Prize-winning play ‘Sweat.'”

“‘We thought, how do you make a piece of community theater that is as socially conscious as the material it addresses?’ Ms. Chase said.”

“Preparing the rest of the cast is not unlike passing on oral history. Rehearsals have been almost as ritualistic as Pan itself…Kingmelvin Brown — a 65-year-old from the Roundtable Center with his face shaved clean down the middle, including one eyebrow — said he appreciated the rehearsal style because it was ‘out of the box, just like me.'”
