First To Fall
In First To Fall the first time filmmaker Rachel Beth Anderson chronicles the challenging journey of two Libyan youth as they are transformed from Canadian residents to freedom fighters responding to Muammar Gaddafi’s atrocities and to the commonly labeled Arab Spring. Project& was an early production partner on First To Fall, which comprised of some of the final footage from the Libyan revolutionary struggle.
With just a hand-held camera, Rachel Beth Anderson tells a wrenching story of war, patriotism, passion and growth. Eight months of Anderson’s footage captures both personal stories of transformation and a raw portrait of modern revolution, with all of its chaos and endless painful costs. The film captures the chaos and giddiness of revolution, the brutal loss of lives and innocence. Her intimate interviews with Hamid and Tarek chart their descent into war as they discover who they are and what they are capable of. In Tarek’s words, “The end of the story is different than what I thought.”
